How to protect your skin on the plane whilst travelling

As we scroll through our Instagram this winter our pages are filled with Aperols in Amalfi, rows of sunbeds on the French Riviera and endless sunsets in Santorini. It would seem thatthe only bug people are catching this season is the travel bug.
With that in mind Saint Louve is here to get your skin holiday ready for your next flight with tips and tricks on dealing with the dreaded, dry, recirculated aeroplane air.

Let’s start with your pre-flight checklist:
What you do before your flight is going to set your skin up forsuccess.
We know the temptation to have skin treatments prior to a holiday to have your skin looking its freshest but make sure you avoid treatments that will impair your skin barrier and increase your photosensitivity in the weeks leading up to your trip. This includes lasers, skin needling and peels. A nice soothing, hydrating facial would be our go to for skin prep.
Preparing a healthy skin barrier before flying will minimise the effects of damage and irritation caused by the low humidity in flight. Using Saint Louve’s Vitamin B3, B5 & Hyaluronic Acid Serum is going to hydrate and ensure you have a healthy skin barrier to protect you against the harsh elements of flying.
Make sure you double cleanse before you fly to remove all make up, dirt and impurities.
We always recommend flying make up free to minimise the risk of congestion and blocked pores.
Now drinking plenty of H20 should be on everyone’s daily checklist but it is even more vital that you hydrate your skin from the inside before flying as a sure way to reduce the risk of dry, flaky post flight skin.

What to wear on the flight:
Just as our comfy transit outfit is a must for travelling so too are the products we wear on our skin during the flight.
Due to the increased stress on your skin caused by higher altitudes and dry air we want to focus on products that are going to fight the drying affects of flying. When choosing your serums looking for products containing humectants and emollients are a must. Humectants include Hyaluronic Acid which absorb water like a sponge to maintain moisture in the skin. Emollients are products like squalene that act as a protective layer over the skin which help to lock in moisture.
For the best skin prep we recommend starting with the Saint Louve Vitamin B3, B5 & Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum which will create beautiful plump hydrated skin. Following with our 15% Vitamin C Lustrum Serum which not only has squalene to lock in moisture but also potent levels of Vitamin C to fight free radical damage throughout the flight. With these two products the reduced humidity won’t be able to strip your skins moisture.
Complete this routine with your preferred moisturiser and SPF and you’re good to go.
Make sure you don’t skip your SPF. Studies show that UV levels can be twice as high at the average commercial flight altitude. While the windows block UVB there still is the risk of damage from UVA through the glass.
If you’re on a long-haul flight one of our favourite hacks is to pack a moisturising sheet mask to pop on during the flight to add some moisture back into the skin while you sit back and watch your favourite TV series or new release movies. You may get a few funny looks but it’s worth it for fresh, dewy skin when you land. Also pack all your skin care products for longer flights so you can cleanse and reapply your products on board or during a stopover.

Let the holiday begin:
After hours of recirculated air, dirt and impurities can build up on the skin so to fight post flight break outs we suggest another double cleans post flight to remove any build up. Repeat your skin care by reapplying our two favourite daily serums; Vitamin B3, B5 & Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum, 15% Vitamin C Lustrum Serum to replenish and lock in moisture after the flight. Finish with your moisturiser and SPF and enjoy your holiday with glowing, saintly skin.

Every person’s skin type and needs are different and not all products are suitable for all skin types. If you are planning a trip away or would like to know what Saint Louve productswould best suit your skin, try our Skin Quiz https://saintlouve.com.au/pages/skin-quiz
