The “clean”, “non toxic”, “natural” myth of the skincare industry
Consumers are increasingly drawn to products that promise to nourish their skin without exposing it to harmful chemicals. While the intention behind this movement is commendable, there exists a pervasive myth that natural and non-toxic skincare products are inherently superior, and that active ingredients can be harmful or less effective.
The desire for non-toxic skincare products is rooted in concerns about potential health risks associated with synthetic chemicals commonly found in traditional skincare formulations. Consumers seek products that are free from parabens, sulphates, phthalates, and artificial fragrances, believing that such ingredients can be harsh on the skin and contribute to long-term health issues. As a result, the demand for natural, organic, and clean beauty products has surged.
While opting for non-toxic skincare is a valid choice, dismissing active ingredients as toxic or ineffective is a misconception that needs to be addressed. Active ingredients are substances that have been scientifically proven to deliver specific benefits to the skin, such as reducing fine lines, fading hyperpigmentation, increasing hydration and promoting collagen production.
These active ingredients, such as those used in our Saint Louve products are derived from both natural and synthetic sources and have undergone rigorous testing to ensure their safety and efficacy.
Active ingredients encompass a wide range of compounds, each targeting specific skin concerns. Some of the most well-known and extensively studied active ingredients includesome of our favourites here at Saint Louve:
1. Retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives): Retinoids are renowned for their ability to boost collagen production, reduce fine lines, and improve skin texture. They are one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients available and have been widely researched for their benefits. Our 0.25% Encapsulated Retinol Serum is a powerful overnight serum that aids in skin renewal
2. Hyaluronic Acid: This naturally occurring molecule is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin, resulting in improved hydration and plumpness. It's a staple in many skincare routines. Our Vitamin B3, B5 & Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum is our go to for daily hydration, it will leave your skin with that luminous glow our Saint Louve clients know and love.
3. Vitamin C: An antioxidant powerhouse, vitamin C helps brighten the skin, fade dark spots, and protect against environmental damage. Not all Vitamin C serums are created equally. Our 15% Vitamin C Lustrum Serum contains 5 potent forms of Vitamin C and is enclosed in airtight packaging to ensure the ingredients remain stable throughout its entire use.
4. Salicylic Acid: A beta hydroxy acid (BHA), salicylic acid is excellent for treating acne and exfoliating the skin's surface. While Lactic/Glycolic acids: Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) aids in gentle exfoliation, promoting cell turnover and revealing smoother, more radiant skin. Combining the two in Our 12% AHA BHA Exfoliating Serum renews and refines all in one serum to create saintly soft, smooth skin.
It's important to recognize that non-toxic and active ingredients are not mutually exclusive. Saint Louve has created products that are both effective and free from potentially harmful chemicals. The key lies in informed product selection and understanding the purpose of each ingredient. Our Founder Elly Seymour has ensured only the safest and most effective ingredients are used to formulate every Saint Louve product. Her extensive knowledge alongside the pharmacists whom she works closely with throughout the entire formulation and production process means our customers can expect clinically proven and measurable results without any health risks.
